Most packing lists for bike trips are generic enough to apply to any trip. This one's specific to what actually matters on a 2-day ghat-road ride from Bengaluru.
On your body
- ISI-marked helmet — non-negotiable, and yours, not a rental you've never worn before
- Riding jacket with elbow/shoulder protection if you have one — ghat roads have real curves
- Full-length riding pants or jeans, never shorts
- Riding gloves — grip matters more than people expect on long stretches
In your bag
- A change of clothes for the destination, plus one spare riding layer in case of rain
- A dry bag or rain cover for your backpack — even outside monsoon, ghat weather is unpredictable
- Power bank and cable — phone battery drains fast running navigation and camera
- Basic first-aid: band-aids, any personal medication, motion sickness tablets if relevant
- Cash — small towns and estate stops don't always take cards
On the bike
- Valid driving licence, RC and PUC certificate — always, not just for this trip
- A basic puncture kit if you're comfortable using one, though the group's lead rider usually carries emergency tools too
One thing people consistently forget: sun protection. A full day of riding means real sun exposure on your hands, neck and face even on a cool day — sunscreen and a buff or neck gaiter go a long way.
Frequently asked questions
Helmet, always. Full riding gear is less critical for short, easy rides but still recommended — road conditions can change fast, and it costs nothing to be prepared.
