Chikmagalur gets compared to Coorg constantly, and while they're both coffee country in the Western Ghats, they're not interchangeable. Chikmagalur is hillier, home to Mullayanagiri (Karnataka's highest peak), and generally has a slightly more rugged, trek-friendly character than Coorg's rolling estate roads.
Distance and drive
About 245km from Bengaluru, roughly 5-5.5 hours by road — similar distance to Coorg, which is why people often end up choosing between the two rather than doing both in one trip.
The case for going on a weekday
Chikmagalur's sunrise treks and estate roads get genuinely busy on weekends, to the point where the pre-dawn queue for a Mullayanagiri sunrise can undercut the whole point of going. A weekday trip trades a day of leave for near-empty trails and none of the traffic getting in or out.

- A working coffee estate tour — Chikmagalur is literally where coffee was first cultivated in India, per local legend, by Baba Budan
- Hebbe Falls, if you don't mind a short jeep ride in to reach it
When to go
October–February for clear peak views and comfortable trekking weather. Monsoon (June–September) turns the hills a spectacular green but also brings fog that can completely block the summit views you're going for.
