A lot of destinations get compressed into a rushed 2D1N trip when they'd genuinely benefit from an extra day. If you've got a long weekend, here's where that extra time actually changes the experience rather than just adding more driving.
Munnar's tea hills
Munnar is far enough (and has enough to see — tea gardens, Top Station, multiple viewpoints) that compressing it into two days means spending a disproportionate share of your trip in the car. A long weekend lets you actually settle into the pace the destination calls for.
Kochi and Alleppey's backwaters
A houseboat stay on the backwaters is close to pointless if you're rushing straight back the next morning — the whole appeal is slowing down. Combined with Kochi's old town, this genuinely needs the extra day to not feel rushed.
How to think about the extra day
- Use it for the slow parts — a houseboat, a full day at altitude in Munnar, not more driving
- Long weekends fill up faster than regular weekends — book earlier than you think you need to
- If you're combining a long drive with limited time regardless, a long weekend justifies the travel time far better than a rushed 2-day trip to the same place would
