Bengaluru to Valparai, Tamil Nadu
Valparai sits on a plateau in the Anamalai hills, reached by a ghat road that climbs out of the coconut groves of Pollachi in 40 numbered hairpin bends. At the top the world turns into tea: clipped green slopes, silver oak shade trees, estate lines and cloud drifting across the road at noon.
We leave Bengaluru on Friday night and are at the foot of the ghat when the forest checkpost opens. Saturday is dams, falls and a river trail around Aliyar, Monkey Falls and Sholayar; Sunday is viewpoints and tea estates before an easy descent and the drive home. Keep an eye on the forest edges: lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri tahr and elephants all live here.
