Bengaluru to Thekkady (Periyar) & Vagamon, Kerala
Two very different corners of Kerala's high ranges. Thekkady is the edge of the Periyar Tiger Reserve: a drowned-forest lake where elephants and gaur come down to drink, cardamom and pepper growing in the shade, and evenings of Kathakali and Kalaripayattu in Kumily town.
Vagamon, a winding drive north, is open meadows, a British-planted pine forest and ridges that disappear into cloud by afternoon. In between we leave the Tempo Traveller for an off-road jeep ride to Parunthumpara, the eagle-shaped rock above a sea of valleys, so the transfer day becomes one of the best parts of the trip.
Day by day
Drop-off: Bengaluru (same pickup points, dropped back after the trip)
Day 1
Board on Friday night and climb into the Cardamom Hills by morning. After breakfast and a rest, the day is spice gardens, the Periyar boat cruise and an evening of Kerala's martial and dance traditions.
Board the Tempo Traveller (Friday night). First pickup at RMZ Ecospace, Bellandur, then Silk Board and Electronic City (near M5 Mall). Bring a warm layer; nights in the Kerala hills are cool even when Bengaluru is not.
Introductions on board. A short round of introductions with your trip captain, then lights down as we head south through Salem, Dindigul and Theni.
Climb the Kumily ghat. The road rises from Theni's vineyards and coconut groves up the ghat into Kerala. Keep your window seat for the views over the Cumbum valley.
Breakfast and check-in in Thekkady. A Kerala breakfast at the stay, then time to shower and rest after the night drive.
Spice plantation walk. A guided walk among cardamom, pepper vines, cinnamon and clove, with the grower explaining how each is picked and dried. A small fee is usually charged on the spot.On your own
Lunch in Kumily. Pay-as-you-go. A Kerala meals plate with sambar, thoran and a crisp pappadam.On your own
Periyar lake boat cruise. The 15:30 boat drifts past dead trees standing in the water; watch the banks for elephants, gaur and otters. Tickets are sold on the spot and paid on your own; slots can fill quickly.On your own
Kalaripayattu or Kathakali show (optional). Kumily's small theatres stage an hour of Kerala's martial art or its painted-face dance drama in the evening. Tickets on your own.On your own
Dinner on your own. Pay-as-you-go. Try a Kerala parotta with beef or vegetable stew in town.On your own
Overnight in Thekkady. Pack a small bag for tomorrow's jeep ride: water, a cap and a windcheater.
Day 2
An off-road jeep ride through the high ranges to Parunthumpara and Pattumala, then on to Vagamon for an evening on its meadows.
Breakfast and check-out. Breakfast at the stay, then we load up and head north along the Kottayam–Kumily road.
Off-road jeep ride near Sathram. Switch to 4x4 jeeps for rutted estate and grassland tracks on the edge of the reserve. Expect to be bounced around; keep cameras strapped and bags zipped.On your own
Parunthumpara viewpoint. A rock shaped like an eagle's head above deep valleys and misty ridges near Peermade. The edge has no railing in places, so keep back.
Pattumala church and tea slopes. A small hilltop church ringed by tea estates and flowering gardens. A peaceful place for a few minutes' quiet.
Lunch en route. Pay-as-you-go at a roadside restaurant on the way to Vagamon.On your own
Check in at Vagamon. Settle in and rest. The temperature drops noticeably up here, so keep a layer handy.
Vagamon meadows at sunset. Walk up the rounded, grass-covered hills and watch the light fade over the ridges. Cloud often rolls in fast; it is part of the charm.
Dinner on your own. Pay-as-you-go, usually at the stay. Tonight is a good night for a bonfire and stories if the stay allows it.On your own
Overnight in Vagamon. Nights can be cold; ask for an extra blanket if you need one.
Day 3
A morning among Vagamon's pines and viewpoints, with paragliding for those who want it, then the long drive back to Bengaluru.
Breakfast and check-out. Breakfast with a view of the mist lifting off the valley, then pack up.
Vagamon pine forest. A British-era plantation of tall pines on a steep slope, carpeted with needles and very quiet in the morning. Paths are slippery after rain.
Valley viewpoint and adventure park. Views down to the plains on a clear day. Paragliding and other activities at the adventure park are optional, weather-dependent and paid on your own.
Lunch and depart for Bengaluru. Pay-as-you-go lunch, then we head back via Kumily and Theni.
Dinner stop en route. Pay-as-you-go dinner at a highway restaurant near Salem.On your own
Day 4
We reach Bengaluru in the early hours and drop you at the same pickup points.
Arrive Bengaluru, trip ends. Drop-offs at Electronic City (M5 Mall), Silk Board and RMZ Ecospace. Timing depends on ghat and highway traffic.
