Bengaluru to Shivanasamudra, Talakadu & Kollegal, Karnataka
South of Bengaluru, the Kaveri splits around an island and throws itself off the Deccan edge in two very different waterfalls. A little downstream, whole temples lie half-buried in sand at Talakadu, and in the dry hills beyond Kollegal, a Tibetan monastery hums with prayer.
This day trip strings all three together. We start at Taksham Monastery in the Dhondenling settlement, spend the middle of the day at Bharachukki and Gaganachukki, and finish on the dunes of Talakadu with sunset over the river, before driving home on the expressway.

Day 1
Down the Mysuru expressway and into Kaveri country: a Tibetan monastery in the scrub beyond Kollegal, the twin falls of Shivanasamudra, then Talakadu's temples half-swallowed by sand as the sun goes down over the river.
Pickups begin at RMZ Ecospace. First pickup at RMZ Ecospace, Bellandur, then Banashankari (BDA Complex), RR Nagar and Kengeri on Mysore Road. Wear shoes with good grip; the falls viewpoints have uneven, sometimes wet steps.
Breakfast stop at Maddur. Pay-as-you-go. The town's famous crisp, onion-flecked Maddur vade with filter coffee is the obvious order.On your own
Drive via Malavalli and Kollegal. Sugarcane and paddy give way to dry hills and forest edges as we head south towards Hanur and the Tibetan settlement at Odeyarapalya.
Taksham Monastery, Dhondenling. One of five monasteries in the Dhondenling Tibetan settlement: prayer flags, painted murals, rows of prayer wheels and maroon-robed monks. Remove shoes in the prayer hall and ask before photographing.
Back towards the Kaveri. We retrace the road through Kollegal to the southern bank of the river at Shivanasamudra.
Bharachukki Falls. The Kaveri spreads into a wide, horseshoe-shaped curtain of water here. Steps lead down to closer views; coracle rides, when water levels allow, are optional and on your own.
Lunch near Shivanasamudra. Pay-as-you-go. A simple countryside restaurant serving Karnataka meals, ragi mudde and rice plates.On your own
Gaganachukki Falls. On the other arm of the river, the water drops in a narrow, roaring plunge into a deep gorge, best seen from the viewpoint near the dargah. Fullest from July to October.
Talakadu's sand-buried temples. Walk across soft dunes to the Vaidyeshwara and Hoysala-era Kirthinarayana temples, emerging from the sand that legend links to the curse of Alamelamma. Footwear stays off inside.
Sunset on the Kaveri at Talakadu. The river bends lazily past sandbanks and shallow water here. Dip your feet or watch the coracles as the light goes gold around 18:15.
Start the drive back to Bengaluru. Via Malavalli and Maddur onto the expressway, with a short tea stop on the way.
Arrive Bengaluru, trip ends. Drop-offs at Kengeri, RR Nagar, Banashankari and finally RMZ Ecospace, from about 21:00 onwards. Timing depends on traffic entering the city.
