Bengaluru to Skandagiri, Karnataka
Skandagiri's claim to fame is the 'sea of clouds' — a blanket of fog sitting in the valley below while the summit stays clear, visible only if you're up there before the sun is.
That means a late-night start, a climb under the stars, and a sunrise most people only see in photos. You're back in the city well before your Sunday would normally even start.
Day by day
Drop-off: Bengaluru (same assembly point, dropped back after the trip)
Day 1
A pre-dawn ride up the airport highway to Chikkaballapur, a torchlit climb from Papagni Mutt on the first permitted slot, and sunrise among the fort ruins and old Shiva temple, with the valley below often lost under cloud.
Pickups begin at RMZ Ecospace. First pickup at RMZ Ecospace, Bellandur, then Hebbal, Yelahanka and Devanahalli; exact spots and live location go on the trip WhatsApp group. Wear trek shoes, layers and a windcheater, and carry a torch, 1.5 litres of water and a government photo ID.
Depart Bengaluru via NH-44. A quiet run up the Hyderabad highway past the airport towards Chikkaballapur. Catch what sleep you can.
Arrive at Papagni Mutt, Kalavara. The trail begins by the old mutt and temple at the foot of the hill. Final layers on, torches out, and a quick safety briefing from the trek lead.
Forest checkpost and ID check. The group enters on its pre-booked forest department slot, a few minutes' walk above the mutt. Plastic is checked and discouraged, so bring a reusable bottle.
Climb by torchlight. Around 2 hours up through scrub, boulders and a couple of steeper rocky patches, with the lights of Chikkaballapur below. The sweep guide keeps the group together.
Summit, tea and sunrise. Hot tea or coffee as the sky lightens; sunrise falls between roughly 6:00 and 6:40 by season. From October to February the valley often fills with cloud below you.
Fort ruins and the Shiva temple. Wander the crumbling 18th-century fort walls and the small, still-worshipped Shiva temple on top, with Nandi Hills and the neighbouring peaks emerging as the cloud burns off.
Descend to the base. About 1.5 hours down in daylight, when the loose gravel is much easier to read. Take the rocky sections slowly.
Breakfast stop, then home by ~11:00. A stop in Chikkaballapur or along the highway for idli, dosa and strong coffee at your own cost, then drop-offs at Devanahalli, Yelahanka and Hebbal. On your own
