Bengaluru to Puducherry
Puducherry moves at its own pace: waves slapping against the rocks at dawn, the smell of fresh bread in the French Quarter, and streets painted in shades of mustard and rose. It is close enough for a weekend and different enough to feel like a proper escape.
We leave Bengaluru on Friday night and reach the seafront in time for sunrise. Saturday is Auroville and a boat across to Paradise Beach, with a pool at the hotel to come back to. Sunday is for White Town, the Aurobindo Ashram and the mangroves, before an evening drive home.
Day by day
Drop-off: Bengaluru (same pickup points, dropped back after the trip)
Day 1
Leave on Friday night and reach the rocky seafront as the sky turns pink. After breakfast and a shower, the day moves from Auroville's red-earth forest to an afternoon on a sandbar beach reached by boat.
Board the Tempo Traveller (Friday night). First pickup at RMZ Ecospace, Bellandur, then Silk Board and Electronic City (near M5 Mall). Eat dinner before boarding and keep a light jacket handy; the AC runs cool overnight.
Tea halt past Krishnagiri. A short stretch-and-chai stop on the highway before we turn east through Tiruvannamalai and Villupuram towards the coast.On your own
Sunrise walk on Rock Beach. We roll onto Goubert Avenue as the sun lifts out of the Bay of Bengal. Walk the promenade past the Gandhi statue, the old lighthouse and the waves breaking on the boulders.
Check in, freshen up and breakfast. Rooms are AC, triple or quad sharing, with a pool on site. Early check-in depends on the hotel, but a room to shower in is always kept ready.
Auroville Visitors Centre. A short film and exhibits explain the township founded in 1968 around the idea of human unity. Collect the free pass here for the Matrimandir viewing point.
Walk to the Matrimandir viewing point. A shaded path of roughly a kilometre through banyan and cashew trees leads to the golden globe seen across its gardens. Keep voices low; it is a place of silence.
Lunch at an Auroville café. Pay-as-you-go. The cafés near the Visitors Centre serve wood-fired pizza, salads and South Indian plates, often with produce grown in Auroville's farms.On your own
Ferry to Paradise Beach from Chunnambar. A boat winds down the Chunnambar backwater to a long sandbar between river and sea. The ferry ticket is on your own; boats usually stop running by early evening.On your own
Afternoon on Paradise Beach. Soft golden sand, casuarina shade and surprisingly clear water. Paddle near the flags only; the currents here are strong and swimming out is not allowed.
Back to the hotel, pool time. Rinse off the sand and take a dip or simply nap before the evening.
Dinner and an evening on the promenade. Pay-as-you-go. The seafront closes to traffic in the evening and fills with walkers; try French bakes, Creole curries or seafood in White Town.On your own
Overnight in Puducherry. A proper bed after the overnight drive. Breakfast is early tomorrow so we catch the Ashram's morning hours.
Day 2
A slow morning among the ochre and mustard houses of the French Quarter, with a quiet hour at the Aurobindo Ashram, then a boat ride through the mangroves before the drive home.
Breakfast and check-out. Pack up and load bags into the Tempo Traveller before we head into town.
Notre Dame des Anges. The pale pink and cream church facing the sea dates from 1858, with services in French, Tamil and English. On Sundays, step in quietly between masses.
Walk through White Town. Bougainvillea spilling over gateways, street names in French and Tamil, and colonial villas on Rue Romain Rolland and Rue Dumas. Good light for photographs before the heat builds.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram. The flower-covered samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother sits in a hushed courtyard. Open 08:00–11:30 and 14:00–18:00; no photography, and phones on silent.
Lunch in the French Quarter. Pay-as-you-go. A café crêpe, a Chettinad thali or fish curry and rice; your trip captain will have a few suggestions.On your own
Mangrove boat ride at Murungapakkam. About an hour on the Ariyankuppam backwaters among mangrove roots, egrets and kingfishers, towards the Thengaithittu estuary. The boat ticket is on your own.On your own
Depart Puducherry for Bengaluru. We head inland through Villupuram and Tiruvannamalai as the afternoon light fades over the paddy fields.
Dinner stop on the highway. Pay-as-you-go dinner near Krishnagiri before the last stretch into the city.On your own
Arrive Bengaluru, trip ends. Drop-offs at Electronic City (M5 Mall), Silk Board and RMZ Ecospace, roughly in that order. Timing depends on Sunday-evening traffic at Hosur.
