Bengaluru to The Nilgiris (Kotagiri, Coonoor and Ooty), Tamil Nadu
The Nilgiris, done the unhurried way. We start in Kotagiri, the quietest of the three hill towns, where tea runs to the edge of the plateau and Catherine Falls drops off a cliff you can watch from Kodanad's railings. Coonoor comes next, all fog and cliff-edge viewpoints, and then the best part: the little blue Nilgiri Mountain Railway train, puffing uphill through tunnels and tea from Coonoor to Ooty.
The last morning is for Doddabetta, the highest point in the Nilgiris, a working tea factory and the pine woods on the Gudalur road before we drop down through Mudumalai and Bandipur at dusk. Meals are left open so you can eat where you like; your trip captain knows the good places.
Day by day
Drop-off: Bengaluru (same pickup points, dropped back after the trip)
Day 1
A night drive to the Bandipur forest gate, a dawn crossing into the Nilgiris, then a slow day among Kotagiri's tea estates, waterfalls and cliff-edge viewpoints.
Board the Tempo Traveller (Friday night). First pickup at RMZ Ecospace, Bellandur, then Banashankari (BDA Complex), RR Nagar and Kengeri on Mysore Road. Carry a proper jacket; Nilgiri nights are cold in every season.
Rest halt near Gundlupet. The Bandipur and Mudumalai forest roads are closed to traffic from 21:00 to 06:00, so we pause here and sleep until the gates open.
Dawn drive through Bandipur and Mudumalai. Keep watch for elephants, gaur and spotted deer by the road, then climb the Gudalur ghat into tea country. Take motion-sickness tablets now if you need them.
Breakfast on the way into Kotagiri. Pay-as-you-go. Hot idli, pongal and filter coffee at a local tiffin place.On your own
Catherine Falls. From Aravenu, a 15 to 20 minute walk through tea brings you to a view of this two-tiered fall on the Kallar. It runs strongest from July to November and thins out by April.
Lunch in Kotagiri. Pay-as-you-go. A South Indian meals plate or a Badaga-style dish if you can find one.On your own
Kodanad viewpoint and tea estates. The road to Kodanad runs through unbroken tea to a railing on the plateau's edge, with Rangaswamy Peak, the Moyar valley and the plains far below. Clouds can close the view in minutes.
Check in at the Kotagiri stay. Rooms are triple or quad sharing. The evening is yours; the town's bakeries are worth a wander.

Day 2
A morning of cliff-edge views around Coonoor, then the Nilgiri Mountain Railway up to Ooty. The afternoon is for Ooty's lake and its Victorian botanical garden.
Check out, breakfast in Coonoor. A 20 km drive through tea to Coonoor. Breakfast is pay-as-you-go; try the bun butter jam at an old bakery.On your own
Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock. Dolphin's Nose juts over a deep gorge with Catherine Falls on the far side; Lamb's Rock looks down to the Coimbatore plains. Mornings are usually clearest.
Sim's Park. A sloping, century-old garden in a ravine, full of old trees, ferns and flowering beds. A short, gentle wander before the train.
Toy train from Coonoor to Ooty. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway climbs past Wellington, Lovedale and Ketti through tunnels and tea, about 70 minutes. Seats depend on railway availability; sit on the left side for valley views.
Lunch in Ooty. Pay-as-you-go, near Charing Cross. The Tempo Traveller meets us at Ooty station.On your own
Government Botanical Garden. Terraced lawns laid out in the 1840s, with glasshouses, a fossilised tree trunk and huge old conifers. Allow an hour to wander.
Ooty Lake and town. Stroll the lakeside as the evening mist comes in, or take a boat out on your own. Browse for homemade chocolate, eucalyptus oil and Nilgiri tea.On your own
Check in at the Ooty stay. Rooms are triple or quad sharing. It gets properly cold after dark, so keep a warm layer handy.

Day 3
An early climb to the highest point in the Nilgiris, a working tea factory and the pine woods on the Gudalur road, before we drop through the forests to Mysore and Bengaluru.
Doddabetta Peak. At about 2,637 m, the summit looks over the whole plateau, with Ooty below and the Mysore plains on clear mornings. Go early, before the clouds and crowds arrive.
Breakfast on the Doddabetta road. Pay-as-you-go. Something hot, and a chai in a paper cup at the viewpoint stalls.On your own
Tea factory visit. See green leaf withered, rolled, fermented and dried in a working factory, then taste a few grades. Buying tea is up to you.
Check out and drive the Gudalur road. Back to the stay to collect bags, then west out of Ooty through eucalyptus and grassland.
Pine Forest and Shooting Point. Tall pines on a slope running down to the Kamaraj Sagar reservoir, then the rolling meadows where countless film songs were shot. Soft needles underfoot; watch the steep bits.
Lunch en route. Pay-as-you-go before the descent.On your own
Down the ghat and through the forests. Via Naduvattam, Gudalur, Mudumalai and Bandipur, crossing the forest stretch well before the 21:00 closure. A short tea halt near Mysore.
Arrive Bengaluru, trip ends. Drop-offs at Kengeri, RR Nagar, Banashankari and RMZ Ecospace. Timing depends on holiday traffic on Mysore Road.
