Bengaluru to Mandaragiri and Devarayanadurga, Tumakuru, Karnataka
Two granite hills off Tumkur Road, a couple of hours from the city, and a full day of climbing, temples and wide open views. Mandaragiri is a bare boulder hill crowned by four small Jain basadis from the 12th to 14th centuries, reached by a flight of steps cut into the rock. At its foot stands the Guru Mandir, an 81-foot hall shaped like a peacock-feather whisk, and behind the hill lies Mydala Lake, still and wide under a big sky.
After lunch in Tumakuru we stop at Namada Chilume, a spring in the rock tied to a Ramayana legend, with a small deer park around it. The day ends on Devarayanadurga, a forested hill with temples to Narasimha, where we climb through boulders and scrub to the top for the late-afternoon light before driving home.

Guru Mandir at Mandaragiri. The 81-foot hall is shaped like a pinchi, the peacock-feather whisk carried by Digambara monks. Inside is a meditation space; silence is expected and shoes stay outside.
Climb the steps to the Basadi Betta temples. Roughly 450 steps carved into the rock, past a manastambha pillar, to four small Jain basadis from the 12th to 14th centuries. Go early; the granite heats up fast.
Mydala Lake. Seen whole from the summit, then up close: a wide lake behind the hill, calm and bird-filled. A good spot to sit, rehydrate and cool off.
Lunch in Tumakuru. Pay-as-you-go, at a vegetarian meals place in town.On your own
Namada Chilume spring and deer park. A small spring rising from a rock that legend says Rama struck with an arrow, inside a forest patch with spotted deer. Open 10:00 to 17:00.
Trek up Devarayanadurga. A guided climb of about an hour on stone steps and rocky paths, past the Narasimha temples, to the summit at roughly 1,200 m. Temple opening hours vary; darshan only if open.
Evening views from the top. Watch the plains turn gold and the sun drop behind the hills, around 18:10 to 18:40 depending on the month. We start down before full dark; carry a torch.
Drive back to Bengaluru. Down the hill and onto Tumkur Road, with a short tea halt if the group wants one.
Arrive Bengaluru, trip ends. Drop-offs at the Nelamangala toll, Goraguntepalya, Yeshwanthpur and finally RMZ Ecospace around 21:15, depending on Tumkur Road traffic.
