Bengaluru to Coorg (Kodagu), Karnataka and Wayanad, Kerala
Two hill districts, one long weekend. Coorg gives you the grassy Mandalpatti ridge at first light, the spray of Abbey Falls and Raja Seat glowing at dusk, with a bonfire at a coffee-country homestay to close the night. Then the road drops south through Kodagu's forests to Iruppu, a cold, loud waterfall at the edge of the Brahmagiri hills, and on across the border into Wayanad.
Wayanad is wetter, wilder and a shade greener. On the last morning you wade into the pool below Soochipara's granite cliffs, then head up to 900 Kandi, where a glass bridge and a long zipline hang over the forest canopy. We leave by early afternoon so the forest roads home are behind us before they close for the night.
Day by day
Drop-off: Bengaluru (same pickup points, dropped back after the trip)
Day 1
An overnight run down Mysore Road puts you on the Mandalpatti ridge for sunrise. After a slow homestay breakfast, the day moves from waterfall spray to a Madikeri sunset and a bonfire.
Board the Tempo Traveller (Friday night). First pickup at RMZ Ecospace, Bellandur, then Banashankari (BDA Complex), RR Nagar and Kengeri on Mysore Road. Keep a fleece and walking shoes in your day bag; the ridge is cold at dawn.
Jeep climb to Mandalpatti. Tempo Travellers cannot manage the last rutted forest track, so we switch to local 4x4 jeeps near the Abbey Falls road. The jeep fare is paid on the spot; the entry ticket is on us.On your own
Sunrise on the Mandalpatti ridge. A short walk up the grassy spine to about 1,600 m, where cloud often pools in the valleys below. The site opens at 06:00; monsoon mornings can be misty and very windy.
Breakfast and check-in at the homestay. A Kodava breakfast, often akki roti or puttu with curry, then a hot shower and a nap. Rooms are triple or quad sharing.
Abbey Falls. A paved path winds down through coffee and pepper vines to a hanging bridge facing the falls, strongest between July and October. The walk back up is steep; take it slowly.
Lunch in Madikeri. Pay-as-you-go. Pandi curry with kadambuttu, Coorg's steamed rice balls, is the dish to try.On your own
Rest at the homestay. Catch up on the sleep the overnight drive took from you, or sit out on the veranda with estate coffee.
Sunset at Raja Seat. The garden where Kodagu's kings once watched evenings fall looks west over layered ridges. Sunset is roughly 18:10 to 18:30 depending on the month.
Madikeri market stroll. Browse for Coorg coffee, cardamom, pepper, homemade wines and chocolate in the lanes around the market. Shopping is on you.On your own
Dinner, bonfire and music night. Dinner together at the homestay, then songs and games around the fire. Pack tonight; we leave after breakfast.
Day 2
A morning among the coffee bushes, then a drive through south Kodagu to Iruppu Falls. We cross into Kerala in the afternoon and watch the sun go down over Wayanad's hills.
Coffee estate nature walk. Walk the estate paths under silver oak shade, past coffee, pepper and orange trees. Mornings are best for birds and for the smell of wet earth.
Breakfast and check-out. A proper breakfast before the longest drive of the trip. Keep water and a snack in your day bag.
Drive through south Kodagu. Via Virajpet and Gonikoppal, past paddy, coffee and quiet Kodava villages towards Kutta and the Brahmagiri foothills.
Iruppu Falls. From the Rameshwara temple, a 15 to 20 minute forest walk leads to the falls, which drop in stages off the Brahmagiri range. Open 08:00 to 17:00; rocks are slippery.
Lunch near Kutta. Pay-as-you-go at a simple local eatery on the way to the Kerala border. On your own
Drive into Wayanad. We cross into Kerala past Tholpetty's forest and Mananthavady, with bamboo thickets and tea giving way to Wayanad's plantations.
Check in at the Wayanad homestay. Settle in and freshen up. Rooms are triple or quad sharing.
Sunset over the Wayanad hills. A short drive to a ridge-top viewpoint near the stay, chosen by your trip captain on the day according to weather and visibility.
Dinner at the homestay. A Kerala dinner, often parotta or rice with a coconut-based curry. Early night; tomorrow starts at the waterfall.
Day 3
A morning dip beneath Soochipara Falls, then the forest canopy at 900 Kandi. We leave Wayanad by early afternoon to clear the forest check posts before the night closure.
Breakfast and check-out. Eat well and change into clothes you can get wet in. Pack a towel and a dry set in your day bag.
Soochipara Falls and a mountain-water dip. A 1.5 to 2 km walk down through forest to a pool at the foot of sheer granite. Bathing is allowed only in the marked area when the forest staff say it is safe.
Jeep up to 900 Kandi. Private vehicles stop at the base; shared local 4x4 jeeps climb the last stretch through forest. The jeep fare is paid on the spot.On your own
Glass bridge and zipline at 900 Kandi. A privately run park with a glass walkway about 100 feet above the canopy and a long zipline, with Chembra's hills beyond. Both are optional and self-paid.On your own
Lunch in Meppadi. Pay-as-you-go. A Kerala meals plate on a banana leaf is the easy choice. On your own
Depart Wayanad for Bengaluru. Via Sulthan Bathery, Muthanga and Bandipur, where elephants and deer often graze by the road. Forest stretches close to traffic at 21:00, so we keep to time.
Arrive Bengaluru, trip ends. Drop-offs at Kengeri, RR Nagar, Banashankari and RMZ Ecospace. Timing depends on traffic around Mysore and on Mysore Road.
