Most people avoid travelling in monsoon, which is exactly why it's worth considering — waterfalls are at full flow, hills are at their greenest, and popular spots are noticeably less crowded than the October-February rush.
Best for waterfall chasing
This is peak season for spots like Chunchi and Shivanasamudra Falls — flows that trickle to nothing by summer are at their most dramatic in July and August.
Best for the classic misty-hills experience
Coorg in the rain is a genuinely different trip from Coorg in December — mist rolling over the estates, the smell of wet earth, and a slower, quieter pace since fewer people are travelling.
Best low-commitment monsoon trip
A lakeside camping trip works well even in light monsoon conditions — reservoirs are fullest right after heavy rain, and a good operator moves the group to covered accommodation if conditions turn genuinely unsafe for tents.
What to actually plan around
- Trekking destinations with exposed rock (Savandurga, for one) are best avoided in monsoon — wet granite is genuinely hazardous
- Ghat roads can be slower and require more caution if you're riding — reduce speed expectations accordingly
- Pack for rain properly: a dry bag, rain cover, and a spare set of clothes matter more this season than any other
